about

DECALOGUE was written, composed, and recorded over the course of 10 days in a 9x10 room in Chicago’s South Loop, a true labor of love begotten from the city of big shoulders. Each song is written to correspond with a law from the Ten Commandments, arguably the best known (and, at times, divisively used) collection of moral/religious laws of all time.

Track Name: For Our Neighbors (X)
Barefoot, your feet on my lap
Dragging your nails on the floor of the cab
Knowing all of the lines have been crossed
Not sure what it means, but I think that you lost

Painted your face red and blue
If not for your smile, they’d mistake me for you
Cause your grandfather died on that hill
If you’re not careful I’m sure that you will

Rested your head on the dash
You want me to leave but you’re too scared to ask
When I put both my hands round your neck
Can’t say a thing, cause you want to be blessed.

I slammed my head
On the back of your head
Said “God bless the land, America!”

(God Bless America,
Land that I love
Stand beside her
And guide her
Through the night with a light from above
From the mountains
To the prairies
To the oceans, what with foam
God Bless America!
Land that I owe!)

I slammed my head
On the back of your head
Said “God bless the land, America!”
Track Name: For Our Friends (IX)
Don’t kill the messenger
With the gobsmacked parable
Standing in for the creditor,
I’ve got a debt to pay

In a blinding storm I came
Tongue-tied for an evil gain
Spouting lies for a selfish way
I’ve got a debt to pay

I didn’t mean to hurt you, I didn’t mean to force your hand
I didn’t mean to cost you, I didn’t mean to make demands
I didn’t know, I didn’t know, I didn’t know

On the street where you let me be
Crying melancholy melodies
While I’m nursing the wounds I keep
I’ve got a debt to pay

Crucify on the balcony
For the sinner you’ve made of me
I’m not sure what the cost will be
But, got a debt to pay

I didn’t mean to hurt you, I didn’t mean to force your hand
I didn’t mean to cost you, I didn’t mean to make demands
I didn’t know, I didn’t know, I didn’t know
Track Name: For Our Conquered (VIII)
I found your door
Come in, come in
I steal your soil
Begin, begin
And I take your wife, like you do
And you pay my price, like a fool

I build my home
Where you live, you live
I found your gold
That you hid, you hid
And I sold your soul for a bid
And I left you cold when I did

And I sold your soul for a bid
And I left you cold when I did
And I left you cold when I did
And I left you cold when I did

(How can you sleep?
How can you dream?
How can you be
On stolen beds?)
Track Name: For Our Lovers (VII)
And I swore it on the Bible
I will bring about rival!
I am not afraid, it’s the choice that I have made.
It’s the path that I will take.

Listen to me, dear,
Denial is the key to our survival
You are not ashamed, it’s the choice that you have made
It’s the path that you will take

And everything seemed brighter where you are
Like I could touch the stars
Your love could heal my heart
And I could smell the sweetness of your breath
The rising in your chest
The helplessness I kept

So you made your way to libel
But did you swear it on the Bible?
When I kiss your lips
Is it love that I detect, or taste of your contempt?

But everything seemed brighter where you are
Like I could touch the stars
Your love could heal my heart
And I could smell the sweetness of your breath
The rising in your chest
The helplessness I kept
Track Name: For Our Brothers and Sisters (VI)
You made the table but you were not able to stay
Well you tried to be strong while I wrestled your cup away
Night burned the candle down, every guest was delayed
And my coffee got cold, so I buried my head in champagne
Quick cake, the cable’s out, there’s no reprieve or restraint
And I’m talking too much to the ghosts of an empty estate
Made like a thief, I was screaming your name
Every lamp that I passed spilled the blood of the lamb who was slain

(I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe)

Every breath
With my gun at your head, And my knee on your chest
And your face in my hands
Every sigh
From your sad, stubborn life, With my knife in your side
And the splint in my eye

Now I’m crawling into the holes and the gaps in your skin
You’ve got nowhere to hide but the space where the light can get in
If your children should live, on your back the whole world
would remain
Every cut that I made drew the blood of the lamb who was slain

Every breath
With my gun at your head
And my knee on your chest, And your face in my hands
Every sigh
From your sad, stubborn life, With my knife in your side
And the splint in my eye
Cry to some God in a tower above
Can’t you hear the plea?

(I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe)
Track Name: For Our Mothers and Fathers (V)
Washed your head and combed your hair
Busted lip, you didn’t care
They could not let it go
They could not let it go
Your mother cried and gnashed her teeth
Your father tried, he couldn’t sleep
He could not let it go
He could not let it go

(There was a man who had two sons
The younger one said to his father, “Please give me my share!”
He took his property, money and let himself out,
Yes, the boy, then he got out of there, got out of there)

When you found a long lost friend
Strung you out and made you thin
You could not let it go
You could not let it go
Broke and also broken down
I made a way to make you found
I could not let you go
I could not let you go

(Climb up to the top and make yourself feel better
and buy all you want and you’ll make yourself better
The better you become the more that you’ll fall
The devil will defeat you and soon you’ll succumb
When you make your way back, you’ll be treated just like
You had never defected, we’ll love you again
We will have a feast and celebrate for the son of mine
Was dead but now he is alive again!
He is alive again! He is alive again! He is alive again!)
Track Name: For Our Pockets (IV)
Labor on, cut your teeth
Feed the dogs, tend the sheep
Work for cheap, oh. Work for cheap, oh.

Soldier on, do not sleep
Pay the bills, clean and sweep
Talk is cheap, oh. Talk is cheap, oh.
Talk is cheap, oh. Talk is cheap, oh.

You never told me
What’s the point of giving up?
I’ve toiled my hands to dust
I’ve toiled myself to rust

Talk is cheap, oh. Talk is cheap, oh.
Talk is cheap, oh. Talk is cheap, oh.
Track Name: For Our Children (III)
When you were born
I knew your name before you
felt your mother’s arms
I knew your head, your hands, your heart

When you called
with sudden cry and sudden fall
you claimed you’d come
you didn’t want to died alone

and
you
you
you don’t know my name

Oh my love
if you could feel the way I felt
about you now
you might understand my pain

So when you call
with sudden burst and needless blows
I take you in
with all your vanity and woes

and
you
you
you don’t know my name
Track Name: For Our Past (II)
I took the ark and brought it to your house
The emblem of a living god it was
And in the morning light you toppled on the floor,
I put you up and asked for more.

I made a feast to drink and eat
I cut your hair I washed your feet
And in the morning light you toppled on the floor,
I put you up and asked for more

How lovely is the symbol of our pride!
How lovely is the symbol of our fight!
How lovely is the symbol of our light!
How lovely is the symbol of our might!

I cleaned you up and covered you with gold
I prayed to you and laid you in the fold
And in the morning light you toppled on the floor,
I picked you up and asked for more.

How lovely is the symbol of our pride!
How lovely is the symbol of our fight!
How lovely is the symbol of our light!
How lovely is the symbol of our might!
Track Name: For Our Now (I)
Whether you grow
So I go
Scatter my seed around
Do you know
That I’m not done
When you’re done with me?
You will grow tall as a tree
From that seed
You will see
You will see
You will see

Whether you grow
So I go
Scatter my seed around
For all
For all
